Subti is a macOS menu bar app that helps you learn languages by watching films you already watch. Hold the Option key and click any word in VLC's subtitles to get an instant translation in context—not just a dictionary definition, but the meaning as used in that specific scene.

Every lookup is saved automatically to your History. The app keeps the original film frame, audio clip, and subtitle line for each word, so you can review them later with full context. You can promote words to your Dictionary and use built-in spaced repetition to review them, or export them to Anki with audio and stills.

Subti runs entirely on your Mac with no internet required for watching or translating. It supports up to 76 language pairs using either a built-in local model, Ollama, or macOS Translation. Your films, subtitles, lookups and dictionary never leave your Mac.
