How long does it take to learn touch typing?

Plan on 10 to 20 minutes of practice per day. Users can type the home row without looking by day two, and learn every key within about two weeks. Speed improvement continues week by week after that, depending on starting level, with a typing test showing your baseline after one minute.

Is touch typing still worth learning?

Yes, if you type on a computer regularly. Research shows that the most important factor for typing speed is consistent mapping of each key to one finger, which is exactly what touch typing trains. Your eyes can stay on the text instead of the keyboard.

What is the best way to practice?

Practice daily in one or two short sessions of 10 to 20 minutes rather than one long session per week. Focus on accuracy first with a goal of 97% per lesson, then build speed gradually with your personal speed goal.

WPM stands for words per minute. A word is counted as five characters including spaces, so 40 WPM equals 200 characters per minute.
